VINCENT PRICE & THE ART OF LIVING
Vincent Price didn’t start out to be an actor. His real passion was art, which he began collecting at the age of 12. Studying Art and its history throughout his youth, he planned to become an Art Historian and moved to London in 1934 for that purpose. He loved the London Theatre and enjoyed acting at a London Theatre Club as a hobby. But unexpectedly and quite suddenly that hobby became a career when he was cast in the hit Broadway production of Victoria Regina opposite the Queen of Broadway herself, Helen Hayes.
Going to Hollywood in the late 30’s it took a while for Price to establish himself. handsome, polished, but a little tall to be a conventional lead, he was a versatile and interesting performer in dozens of films, wITHOUT QUITE finding his niche. There were glimmers of his future in “Tower of London” “The Invisible Man Returns” and his insane aristocrat in “Dragonwyck”. But it wasn’t until “House of Wax” that Price became a true horror star.
In the 1960’s Price became the number one horror star in ROGER Corman’s series of Edgar Allen Poe adaptations. WITCHFINDER GENERAL, THE ABOMINDABLE Dr Phibes & THEATRE OF BLOOD CONTINUED HIS REIGN THROUGH THE EARLY 70’s. in the 1980s he found a new generation of fans as the sinister voice of Michael Jackson’s Song and video for “Thriller”.
But as much as he enjoyed his work, both in Horror and more serious roles, Price never stopped promoting Art and using his knowledge and Expertise to educate and sHaRE HIS PASSION FOR Art. He travelled the world, lecturing at campuses on Art, FOR 6 YEARS in his role as buyer for Sears Roebuck’s Catalogue he bought 50,000 pieces of art, sold to consumers through the Sears Roebuck Catalogue. But PERHAPS his most personal and lasting achievement was His support and endowment of THE East LA Community College, whose students were often under-privileged and came from ethnic backgrounds traditionalLY DENIED ACCESS TO art. Price FELT IT WAS VITAL THAT WHATEVER THEIR BACKGROUND, these youngsters should have the same opportunities as anyone else AND over 40 years Donated 1000’s of art pieces from his own collection, AND A BELOVED VISITOR TO THE COLLEGE.
Vincent Price’s life was and remains an inspiring figure and, in collaboration with his daughter Victoria, we will explore it, in all it’s aspects
